Milk Frothing

If you are having issues getting satisfactory foam with your frother, there could be an issue that you might not have thought of; the milk itself.

To many consumers’ surprise, the actual milk being used can make a critical difference to the finished result.

On average, cow’s milk has a protein content of 3.3%, which is very low. This is why, from one type of milk to another, even a slight difference in protein content can have a dramatic influence on the amount of foam produced.

Sometimes, protein content can vary slightly depending on the time of year also and how the milk is processed and the changes in the feeding of the dairy cows. Cattle in Ireland are usually Grass fed but in times of drought, the Farmers have to change to the feed they normally use in Winter Months.

At the processing plant, a filtering process (such as micro-filtration or ultra-filtration) can also slightly reduce protein content compared to unfiltered milk. This might explain differences observed among various brands of milk.

Certain brands of milk are heavily processed, which will destroy the protein content in the milk; This affected protein content of the milk will, in turn, have a huge bearing on the actual frothing of the milk.

Unfortunately, these differences in protein content don’t appear in the Nutrition Facts tables, since they are minimal and the numbers are rounded off. However, they do help to explain why we don’t always get the same quality or the same quantity of foam for our coffee from one milk carton to the next.

This is not to say that our frothers cannot be used with all types of milk, they can indeed be used on all types of milk from low fat, full fat, to plant-based. However, it is important to take this information provided into consideration as all of these variables between the type of milk, brand, and time of year, etc, does have an effect on how your milk will froth. Because of this, you may find you need to use a different brand of milk to get the quality of froth you desire.

From our own experience, the Avonmore full-fat is a good bet for getting a nice foam with your frother, it has very stable protein content throughout the year too.

Coffee Beans

Most coffee we stock has 2 years shelf life from the date of manufacture and most of the beans we sell to our customers have at least 12 – 18 months shelf life.

Coffee beans need to be stored in a cool, dry, and dark environment. Once the coffee bean bag is opened, please seal the bag or store the beans in an airtight container. We don’t recommend storing the coffee beans in the fridge or anywhere in contact with direct sunlight.

Brewing coffee is as much of an art as it a science. Once you know the common mistakes made with coffee beans, water, and equipment, you can correct them and get back to making a great-tasting brew.

One common problem people might have with their coffee is that their coffee tastes bitter. If this is the case, then we would recommend the following:

  1. Choosing coffee beans with less Robusta, because Robusta coffee tastes bitter and has higher caffeine content. You can consider blends such as Lavazza Tierra SelectionMolinari 100% Arabica, or Lavazza Organic Alteco; all 100% Arabica blends. Read our coffee blog on Arabica vs. Robusta Coffee.
  2. If your coffee tastes super bitter, your drink may be over-extracted. This happens most often with too fine of a grind. Depending on the type of coffee you’re brewing, you may need to adjust the size of your grounds.
  3. After the beans, your water could be the big reason why your coffee tastes bad. Even if you regularly drink water straight from the tap and it tastes fine to you, it may still be the problem. Regular descaling of your coffee machine will not only ensure your equipment is in correct working order, but also improve the taste of your coffee.

If you still have questions on the taste of your coffee beans, we are happy to help out. You can contact us at customerservice@coffeeclick.ie.

Taste preference is a very personal thing that can be hard to advise on. Read our blog below to help you decide which blend of beans is right for you:

The Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade International are different organizations that share similar missions and goals. Lavazza has always worked closely with the Rainforest Alliance Organization, and many of their beans are Rainforest Alliance Certified.

Many coffee products that are sold with the Fairtrade logo don’t guarantee the product is 100% fairtrade; in fact, if only a certain percentage of the product is made of fairtrade ingredients, then it can carry the Fairtrade mark.

In contrast, all Lavazza coffee where there is a rainforest alliance certified logo means 100% of the product comes from rainforest alliance certified farms.

Coffee farms that earn the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal are audited annually against a rigorous standard with detailed environmental, social, and economic criteria.

Rainforest Alliance Certified™ coffee is designed to

  • Safeguard lands and waterways
  • Protect workers, their families, and local communities
  • Improve their health, well-being, working conditions
  • Increase their income

The Lavazza Nespresso® Compatible Compostable (NCC) capsules are compatible with Nespresso® Original* machines. They are not compatible with Nespresso® Vertuo machines.

*Nespresso® Original and Nespresso® Vertuo are trademarks of a third party without any link with Luigi Lavazza S.p.A.

At CoffeeClick, we run vigorous testing before we put any product out to sell on our website. This is the same with Lavazza Nespresso® Compatible Compostable Capsules (NCC). We have tested all 5 blends of coffee capsules on a range of Nespresso® Orignal machine models in our headquarters, and we can assure you that we have not found any issues with the compatibility or extraction.

However, we do understand there are a number of customers who have found issues with the NCC capsules, such as instances where there isn’t a continuing flow of coffee coming out, or that the capsules are not being pierced sufficiently.

The cause of the above issues could be:

1) Lavazza NCC capsules are made with 100% biodegradable material, which is far better for the environment than the aluminium capsules. This new capsule case itself is slightly thicker than the aluminium capsule casing, which might make the capsule a little bit harder to push through the brewing chamber. And this really depends on the condition and model of your coffee machine. Please make sure your machine is regularly descaled as per manufacture’s instruction.

2) Lavazza NCC capsules contain more grams of ground coffee than other capsules; and they are tamped with the same pressure as if you are getting a barista coffee from a traditional coffee machine in the coffee shop.

Some Nespresso Coffee Machines might have a lower in-use bar pressure, (in-use bar pressure is different than built-in bar pressure, as many machines have 15 bar built-in pressure, but in-use ba pressure might be lower), which can cause the extraction process to become more difficult in some cases.

3) Cleaning the coffee chamber to remove any excess oils and ensuring the capsules are dispelled from the chamber after each use will help the extraction process. This build-up of oil can cause issues with the capsules being stuck in the machine or even potential extraction issues as the biodegradable material can create a sticky environment in your chamber.

Also, you can opt for the two Lungo blends – Lungo Avvolgente (Intensity 5) and Lungo Intenso (Intensity 8) which were designed for longer extraction if you like a larger coffee.

Don’t forget to make an Americano is made with 2/3 cups of hot water, with 1/3 cup of espresso, we don’t advise you to over-extract your coffee to get a full cup of coffee. As over-extraction will change the characteristic of the coffee and causing excessive bitterness and acidity.

The general issues customer had with the new Lavazza Eco Caps are the capsules stick inside the chamber, and this can be easily resolved by making sure after each brewing, the coffee capsules fall into the waste capsule drawer, all that you need to do is pull the lever back after brewing until you hear the dropping sound. If the capsule does not fall naturally into the waste capsule drawer, then you can use your finger to push it down.

If the capsules are not being released after each brewing, it could be stuck there for days before the machine was used again, and the coffee oil that comes out from the capsule can make it stick to the chamber, and all following capsules become more prone to stick to the machine as a result. You can check the brewing chamber, and maybe use a tea towel to give is wipe to remove any residue inside.

In terms of extraction, They should work exactly the same as previous non-compostable capsules, as the blend recipes have not changed.
Customers are advised to ensure their machine is descaled for optimum extraction as, especially in areas with hard water, limescale can cause issues with extraction with continued use.

Yes! When it is time to empty out the waste capsule drawer, you can dispose of the capsule and the ground coffee residual into your food waste bin, the brown bin, you don’t have to rinse the capsule out.

Your household’s food waste will then be collected by the waste collection company and end up in an industrial composting facility. All you have to do is make sure you dispose of the capsules responsibly into the right bin.

Under the EN 13432 standard, the compostable plastics will need to be disintegrated after 12 weeks and completely biodegrade after six months. That means that 90 percent or more of the plastic material will have been converted to CO2. The remaining is converted into water and biomass.

The Eco Caps are made with organic compounds known as biopolymers. Under perfect conditions within a composting facility the capsules will end up as compost with the help of microorganisms after 180 days.
